BMW GS Tour Patagonia - Tierra del Fuego: A journey to the end of the world

Motorbike adventure in Chile and Argentina

Our tour starts in Punta Arenas in Chile and leads us to the southern end from Patagonia to Tierra del Fuego. Here a magnificent landscape awaits us with mighty mountains and uniquely wild coastal strips. The main attractions of this trip are places like Torres del Paine, Puerto Natales, El Calafate, the Perito Moreno Glacier and Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world.

Our next destination is Fagnano Lake. This impressive lake is not less than 100 km long and 6 km wide. Again we ride through an impressive mountain landscape and eventually arrive at the Garibaldi Pass. Here we are rewarded with an amazing view over the Lago Escondido. In Ushuaia we experience the special appeal of the southernmost city in the world. After that we ride back to the Magellan Strait via dirt roads. On the mainland we still have to cross huge grasslands. Here, a strong wind is our constant companion. Past the city El Calafate, after 80 km we reach the world-famous Perito Moreno Glacier that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. The curvy road to the glacier is so much fun to ride that it seems to have been built just for us bikers. At the end of the road we stand at this impressive glacier with a width of more than 5 km and almost vertical walls more than 70 metres high.

From Punta Arenas we drive south and cross the famous Magellan Strait. At the Useless Bay we ride along the coast until we reach the seemingly endless grasslands. Further down south we hit the Rio Grande, a paradise for sport fishermen. The Bella Vista Border is the southernmost vehicle crossing in the world. If the water level permits we ride through the Rio Rasmussen which can be a real adventure. Riding in easterly direction, we cross the Patagonian Plateau, a seemingly endless plain, until we see the impressive mountains on the horizon.

We reach Lago Sarmiento via a winding gravel track. A breathtaking view of the gigantic Paine mountain range is another scenic highlight of this tour. Through a lush forest we finally reach the coast of Lugana Verde. Here the Ranch Estanca Lazo awaits us with its large herds of sheep and cattle. From here we visit Torres del Paine, probably the most famous national park in Chile. Forests, mountains, glaciers, rivers, waterfalls and lakes stretch over an area of ??242,000 hectares. Our next stop is Puerto Natales on the banks of Seno Ultima Esperanza (last hope). One of the first settlers, in 1900, was Captain Hermann Eberhard of the German merchant navy.
